Kettlebell Opus – Newsletter #2
The kettlebell swing is the most
basic yet perhaps the most important kettlebell exercise
one will learn. It is the foundation for all pulling
movements with the kettlebell. It is essential to learn
and execute this move properly. Proficiency in the swing
forms the foundation for learning more complex moves
such as the clean and snatch.
Learning proper swing technique gets one into the
concept of training the body globally. That is, the body
must work as a unit. The hips, back, shoulders, legs,
arms all contribute to the proper swing motion.
Swings build the body’s power base as well as develop
strength endurance. The cardio vascular system can be
challenged and enhanced. There is also significant
athletic carry over from strength on the athletic stance
to vertical jump improvement to basic body
explosiveness.
The swing can be “learned” from a book or video, but
there is no substitute for being personally coached by a
qualified instructor. The kettlebell swing is both a
beginning and advanced exercise. The difference is the
advanced practitioner simply does it better and with
perfect form. It is a movement that will keep producing
results for anyone at any level of training.
